  • Skyrim Patch Adds Nothing But DRM…Thanks.

    Skyrim Now With Added DRM!

One of the best things about PC gaming is the fact that on the majority of games, modding the game to your tastes can be achieved without too much dificulty. Even on games that haven’t been designed to be modded, the community usually finds a way. Well it seems like Steam and Bethesda have just teamed up and patched Skyrim adding nothing to the game, in fact they took stuff away.

The other day Bethesda decided to release a stealth patch for their latest game Skyrim. Normally patches are good things that many look forward to, however, due to the game using Steamworks, the patch was rolled out to everyone and everyone was forced to install it. So what exactly did this patch do?

The Bethesda forums quickly figured out that the 18MB patch basically had no other aim than to stop the game from running without Steam and tieing the exe back into Valves VAC. So no longer can you run the game on its own, if you want to play the game, you will have to go back to running an extra layer for no reason what so ever and you can no longer apply the patch that was doing the rounds which enabled you to use more than 2GB of memory when playing.

While there is now another LAA patch  workaround that apparently does the job without altering the executable, the fact that Bethesda is going out of their way to stop people from making the game better is extremely questionable.

Activating the patch had several advanatges including making the game more stable, and enabling the support of  more mods and tweaks, the favourite of which is the  uGrids .ini file change that made the game’s icy landscapes look significantly better. Once Steam auto-updates Skyrim, that opportunity is dead.

You know what annoys me the most about all of this. Bethesda + Steamworks are forcing a patch onto those that have legitimately purchased the game, which disables the games ability to be improved by the community.

Those out there that have pirated the game – well they actually have a better experience than those that spent their hard earned money on the game.

    Nice one…

Well looks like I won’t be buying that game :)

Though to be fair, the game was always meant to have Steamworks integration, it was Bethesda’s own error why it wasn’t there already.

ahh that changes things for me then…. maybe i will buy it

i think what annoyed me most about the Skyrim patch is that it actually punished paying customers while pirates get the benefits of using community updates. If Bethesda actually included those updates i would have no problem with it, the fact they didn’t is what annoys me.
