How Much Money Can an Mobile App Make You?

Whats the first thing you do when you get one of those new wiz bang phones? You head straight to the App store of course. And like most you go straight to the free section and begin downloading.  then after a while maybe, just maybe, you may spend a few dollars here and there and purchase a few apps. So with so many apps on the market place, how much money are the developers actually making?

A recent survey of iOS developers that was completed by an indie developer has shown that when you look at the total lifetime earnings of the top 20 percent of iOS developers, approximately 97 percent of the total game revenue on the Apple App Store was being made by them.  So while there are thousands upon thousands of apps that are there for the taking, its only 20% of those that are making some decent coin. On the other end, the bottom 20% are unfortunately only making  less than $200.

To break it down even further the top 1 percent of iOS game developers earn over a third of all the gaming revenue.  Again, when you look at the other end, the bottom 80 percent of iOS developers are sharing just 3 percent of all App Store game revenue.

25 percent of iOS studios that were part of the 252 surveyed apparently made more than $30,000 in lifetime revenue from their apps.  Another 25 percent made between $1,000 and $10,000 overall.
