MGs first annual (hopefully) Eid Gift Exchange

    Postby s0ndosodn0s » 22 Jun 2012, 08:55

    Assalamu Aleikum! :XD

As I've mentioned previously, I am trying to organize a "Secret Imam" gift exchange for Eid insha Allah and want to get things going but need thoughts/comments/complaints and get an idea of how many people would like to participate in the gift exchange.

It's pretty simple, we're gonna use a website like Elfster.com which pretty much does all the work of sorting names and assigning people and keeps everyones identities secret. I'm gonna steal kitchen's idea and suggest that we do 2 separate exchanges, 1 for the brothers and 1 for the sisters. Since there are not many sisters on here, I'm hoping that at least 1 would like to participate with me and we can exchange gifts (that means no surprise :( but that's okay!)

Also we should be deciding on a spending limit (I was thinking 20$ ?). The users on here are pretty much scattered across the globe mashaAllah but that means that if you want to participate, you may have to be ready to pay some crazy shipping fees and I'm not quite sure how to fix that. If enough people are into it, we can separate it into different regions but it would just be a lot easier if we kept everyone together. You can check people's wish lists on steam or something else and gift them something online so update those wishlists!

So let me know your thoughts or suggestions please :) If it's successful we can do this for next Eid too insha Allah.

    ----------------------------------------------

    UPDATE: Gift exchange commenced
    Sign up deadline: July10th
    Gift Exchange date: August 20th

    ---------------------------------------------

    UPDATE: Names have been drawn!!!!!!

    Things you should do now:
1.Go to the gift exchange website and see who you got! Please check again, because I had to redraw the names, so you might have someone different than you thought you had.

2.Update your wishlist ASAP! If you don't have something specific in mind, write that but it would fun to give your buddy some kind of idea on what to get.

    3. There's a cool function on the site called "Secret Q&A", so if you want to ask your buddy questions on what to gift, use that. Alternatively, I can act as a spy and message the person through here for you.

    4. We are pretty far away from Eid, but I wanted to start the exchange before in case some people weren't going to be around during Ramadan. I will come back and post a reminder a week before Eid, but try and have your gift sent out to be received a bit before or on Eid so that everyone can post their gifts :)

I think that's it, so have fun!

I thought this was a joke but you guys actually going to send things to each other across the globe? Sounds cool but yeah, those shipping costs, and no over the top wishes like a plasma tv. Even santa can't afford that, and that dude ain't real.

I love the idea but I was thinking more around digital purposes to make it easier. I really don't like the idea of having to box things up and send it. (I hate going to the post office lol)
    Peace :D

Why not both then? I love using mail! It's a lot more exciting opening up a package than something digital, hope it's not just me =X
Also, you don't have to physically go to the post office, you can purchase something online and sent it to a different address. Everyone can do as they please as long as everyone gets a gift!

In theory it sounds good but i still think it should be digital downloads only due to convenience and cost.

Then you can go for digital only and whoever wants to go for otherwise can do so. I think I agree with Sondos actually opening something is much more exciting

Is it because you're concerned about leaving your home address? If not, it's your choice if you want it to be digital or not. If so, well... Just know that with this site we're using, only the person that is gifting you something will see your address, and no way any random can get into the exchange lol

I suppose it isn't such a bad idea then (if anyone does get a parcel then they need to do an unboxing/reaction video!)

You should probably make a thread in which people opt in to the secret imaam and specify rules.

    Suggested rules:
    - no foodstuffs (both for hygiene and legal reasons)
    - no breaking the limit under any circumstances
    - only one gift per person? (i dont know about this one tbh)
    - make sure games aren't region locked
    - make sure whatever you buy won't be found offensive (certain games have a low halalability rating)

Most of all. Not sending me a PS3/360 boxed but end up finding a sweater in it.
