Slms all,
By far the biggest request I get from people on our steam group is gaming servers. Its also a subject that has come up several times on the forums.
So I have been researching to see what kind of prices are involved as I have the hardware available at my place to run one but not the bandwidth. So I had a look at getting a server through a data centre to run several gaming servers and unfortunately that's not too cheap either.
For the US Its around $50-$60 a month and around the same, maybe a little cheaper to run one on the UK. This would enable several game servers on one box and also a teamspeak server aswell. Alhamdulillah several members have said they would be happy to donate to help cover the costs and that may be an option, I am still hoping that once the affiliate links are up if people support them by purchasing games through those links, that will also assist in covering costs. Its just a matter of how much is generated through those links and whether that goes into the monthly giveaways or server costs.
Of course the other option is to run just a single game server which would probably work out to around $20 a month. A lot cheaper, but only a single game.
Personally I am thinking of starting the first server in the UK. The main reason for this is
1) Currently the most there are more active members on the forums from he UK than there are from the US (sorry guys but get more Muslim Americans to register :P )
2) Those willing to donate for the server costs are from the UK, so I thought its only fair that they get the first server.
BF3 servers are a joke. I cant believe how EA are just gouging every cent from gamers. While server software is free for basically every game, EA is charging per slot you open, this can work out to around $70 a month to as much as $100 a month for a 64 slot server, and you cant run it on your own server, you have to rent one. Basically day light robbery. So I doubt running a BF3 server is economically feasible at this stage.
The site is still in its infancy and as the site InhsAllah grows I would love to have servers in the US, Europe, Australia, Middle East and South East Asia. But I think logically UK and US is where it will start.
So thought I would post this up so you know where we are up to in regards to servers. As things start falling into place Ill keep updating this post, feel free to put any feedback in regards to this here too.
