    The most epic crash ever

    Postby Kreax » 07 May 2012, 17:42

    Assalaamu alaykum.

As may of you know, I built a really nice gaming rig back in february and I have been enjoying its flawless performance for the past three months. That is, until yesterday.

What happened, you ask? Simple, i tried sli. I married my 560ti 448 core with a second of its kind. At first I had a few driver related hiccups. It started giving me bothersome display problems, so i did what any sane person would do, i threatened that if it didnt shape up, I would turn it into a toaster (actually, i just ran a system restore).

It worked! Drivers updated, cards sli'd. Super! So I thought...

I started to get BSODs left and right. So i disabled sli, and divorced the cards. And figured my adventure should end there for the time being. Only, my computer thought otherwise.

I then recieved 6 different BSODs, one soon after the other. Most pointing fingers at ntoskrnl.exe.

Ranging from bad memory, bad sector, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL; Stop codes 0A, F4, 24, DE, etc.

    Yikes!

I suspected memory, hdd, or mobo hardware problems. Or driver problems (inshaAllah, this) I reinstalled Win7 just to give it a clean slate, and it gave me a BSOD on the very first start up.

This has been a real nightmare. Im not too sure what to do. I can usually handle BSODs every now and then, but this is the worst situation I have ever encountered. It all started with a simple driver error... At least everything is still under warrenty.

    Advice? thulfiqaar, gengis, [url=http://muslimgamer.com/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&un=everyone

    Tl;dr:]everyone

    Tl;dr:
[/url] I think running sli unearthed some hardware problems in my PC. Help!

Im typing this from my ipod touch. At least mobile site works nicely.

This is why I normally have a brilliant cd to help me troubleshoot this. If you have access to a laptop or another PC do the following:

    1. Download hiren's boot cd http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

    2. Burn Hiren's boot cd to a cd/dvd

    3. boot up using that cd and you will be given a set of options.

    4. Easiest is to boot to mini WinXP and run a selection of hardware tools diagnostics. Try first scanning you hdd for any faults, then run diagnostics on your Memory if your harddrive proofs to be fine etc. etc.

I hope this helps, trust me that CD is a lifesaver I really recommend it. Just have a look at the list of software it packs on just one cd! Link below

Check temperatures with HWmonitor and also used memtest to ensure that the ram is fine.
You're gonna have to use the process of elimination, that is.. if thulfiqaars idea doesnt work.

Just to clarify my method is process of elimination, the only difference is instead of you having to swap each and every piece of hardware you can just boot off the cd and you diagnose it using a huge amount of software that is on the cd. Pick whichever one you prefer. You can even boot in to Linux and do some troubleshooting on that cd. Loads of hardware and memory diagnostic tools. Hell, you can even merge partitions and create new ones if you want.

Temperature wasnt the problem. My computer runs typically around 24 to 29 degrees celcius. Even under load it doesnt exceed that by much.

InshaAllah, I'll try the utility after work.

    Jazakum Allahu Khayran.

This CD utility is amazing. I wish I knew about it sooner, could've saved a looooot of headache a few months ago.

I think I may have inadvertently figured out the core issue, but better safe than sorry. I'm currently testing my HDD. Now I'm starting to think 1.5 TB wasn't such a good idea... this'll take a good hour.

    Alhamdulillah.

Alhamdulillah, everything is back on track. No hardware malfunctions have been detected thus far. I will be continuing diagnostics just to be safe though.

<--- this guy is a dummy. While I was searching for the "enable SLI" function on the Mobo BIOS, I seem to have mistakenly clicked "Maximize Performance". This option overclocks my system to the max. My PSU cannot handle such an amazing overclock in addition to SLI, hence all the black outs and BSODs.

I am 80% certain that all of the BSODs have been false positives (with the exception of the driver issue that was resolved early in the process).

Thank you all for your support and advice.
