Music is a rather controversial issue, even among Sunni.

This is the most cited Hadith regarding the subject matter from the bit of reading I've done regarding it being haram. There are some people (mainly Sufis) who use this as justification that music is not haram.

If one were to nitpick though, neither of them deal with music directly. The first I linked is related to musical instruments and the second talking about vocal performances.

I don't know about shia Islam, but I can comment on Islam in general. The vast majority of the scholars throughout time have held the opinion that music is haram. An extremely small minority disagree. I would therefore recommend (as my teachers recommend) you go with the vast majority.

Ibn Masood, radiallahu anhu, who was a great sahaba, said "never will the love of Qur'an and love of music coincide in the same heart." This is not a hadith, it's one level down (athaar).

(Even if you did think music is okay, most of the lyrics of the music today would be considered haram to listen to.)

Since my view on this is too look at what scholors say. Since it is in disagreement i currently do not listen to music when it has lyrics in it (unless they are nasheeds or the lyrics are sparkling clean and even than not alot). I dont however turn off music in games or on videos (unless it is filthy). I also still watch movies, and go shopping at you average shopping center.

Basically I follow his fatwa i guess but I do keep the vast majority in mind and therefore avoid it.
