Suggestion Reading Qur'an for the deceased

    Postby SnakeXT » 30 Jul 2012, 09:37

    Salaamu Alaikaum.

Reading the whole Qur'an for the deceased amongst the members of MG or others that come to MG. How it will be done is each individual will be required to read a certain chapter until we hit 30. It depends how many can participate and how much has been prayed by said individuals.

When it is done, we all meet up on a particular time and day to make dua and inshallah by doing so whoever wanted their x member of family, relative etc will be blessed by will of Allah.

What do you guys think? Is it OK across all beliefs within Islam? We can make this happen.

Reason for this suggestion is my wife has her own islamic group she goes to online and they read Qur'an on their own, given a week and meet on a day and time and make dua. She recently wanted to pass blessing onto her father and there were roughly 100 members in it all saying Ameen. Imagine.

The deceased cannot continue receiving rewards. It ends. But this helps them.

    EDIT

OK this may get confusing. We should read Qur'an on our own but making dua together.

I am most definitely down for this. In fact we can do this for Ramadhan. If we get 5 people, then its 6 juz each, if we get 10 then its 3 each. How many ever people are involved then we just split it and do it. Lets get the ball rolling bro!

You people can take all the easy ones if you wish. We'll see which ones are remaining and see if I can do more than 1.

    Here we go again ...

I'm stepping in because this is a sensitive topic that needs to be dealt with properly, pluralistically. Hence, I materialize from the void once more. Please treat this topic respectfully.

May Allah bless you for asking. There are many scholars who mentioned that this is not permissible. They have their proofs; the TLDR of it is hadith #5 in Imam Nawawi's 40 ahadith, which is collected in Bukhari and Muslim: "Whoever innovates something in this affair of ours (religion) what is not from it, will have it rejected." Using this, and other proofs, their claim is that actions of 'ibaadah (like reading Qur'an, praying, fasting, etc.) are haram unless specifically sanctioned by the shari'ah.

Anyway, that's tangential. What they WILL agree upon, and what I think we can all agree upon, is a set of actions which rasulullah himself did and taught for the deceased of the ummah. I propose, therefore:

    - We make du'a for anyone, alive or dead, for Allah to forgive them
    - We ask Allah to accept their good deeds
    - We donate something on their behalf. Ideally, this will go to an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) on their behalf, such as building a well, a school, a masjid, helping an orphan, etc.

If you guys are willing to do this, too, I'm down. I think I can dig up a list of ongoing charitable works that would qualify as sadaqah jariyah.

    Back into the void,

Thanks for your input Ashes. I will have to confront the molvi or anyone that does do this as to why and where they got their sources from. The local masjiq not too long ago held this. Either that or I misunderstood him.

JazakAllah khair for the post Ashes, but I think we need to let people know that there are different opinions ont his, what you have shared is one opinion, but there is the opposite to that also which i posted the other day, because im lazy, copypasta for those that didnt see it.

    ------------------------------
One school of thought is that yes, the rewards can be passed on to the deceased. This is based on 2 hadeeth, the first

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); knowledge which is beneficial; or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (the deceased).” [Sahih Muslim]

So in this case while the person who passed away has their books closed and cannot gain reward through actions, those that read the Quran can ask Allah to pass the rewards on to that person.

The second is based ont he following haddeeth

bu Qataadah rahimahullaah reported that Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "The best that a man can leave behind after his death are three things: a righteous child who makes du'aa for him, an ongoing sadaqah whose rewards continue to reach him, and a knowledge that continues to be implemented after him." (Ibn Maajah, and others. Verified to be sahih by al-Mundhiri and al-Albaanee).

Abu Qataadah rahimahullaah reported that Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "Among the good deeds that continue to benefit a believer after death are: a knowledge that he taught and disseminated, a righteous child who lived after him, a Qur'aan book that he left as inheritance a masjid that he built, a house that he built for the two wayfarers, a stream that he ran, or a charity that he gave from his wealth during his healthy lifetime so that it would reach him (in rewards) after death." (Ibn Maajah and others. Verified hasan by al-Mundhiri and al-Albaanee). Commenting on this, al-Mundhiri rahimahullaah said: "Some scholars say that the deeds of a human being end with his death. However, since he had caused these things (which are mentioned in the above hadiths), such as the earning of a child, disseminating the knowledge among those who take it from him, compiling a book that remains after him, or establishing a sadaqah, the rewards of these things continue to reach him as long as they continue to exist." ('Awn al-Ma'bud, 8:86)

So good deeds and bad deeds started by the person that has passed away will continue as good and bad even after that person has passed away. So if someone has encouraged another to read the Quran, even after they die, the person who is reading the Quran will inshAllah get the hasanat and the person they make the dua to pass the rewards onto will also.

When I asked about why there is conflict in regards to this, I was told the only school of thought which has any reall issue with this are wahabi\salafi.

By no means did I mean to portray anyone as wahabi\salafi int his thread, if anyone misunderstood i apologise for that. My intentions were just to make clear what the different schools of thought say in regards to the subject. It is always up to you to read further and decide what is right for you based on the imam that you trust and follow and what they say. JazakAllah khair.

    Allahualem.
