The summary is: there is no authentic hadith on this topic. This is the conclusion of shaykh Ibn Rajab, who needs no introduction.

Therefore, if you're going to participate, knock yourself out. So, there's some difference of opinion, and some of us don't believe it's part of our deen to do this.

End fiqh fight, now lets move on to other things.

So gengis , what kind of activities are popular on this night in your area/neighbourhood/family? This is a new thing for me. Is it just solitary worship? Tahajjud?

What the brother was trying to say is in Turkish the word Kandil is used for holy nights, so i think thats where candle came from ;)

On a side note, i have received some pm's about me posting stuff like this. To clarify, some dont see the night as anything significant, while whole other parts of the Muslim world do. Its one of those things that if you decide to do it cool, if not cool. The way i see it is if someone picked up the Quran and read a few pages then alahamdulillah, if someone woke up for tahajjud, alhamdulillah. No harm was done.

Gengis is not saying something is haram etc. but rather he believes that it's a good time to do some more islamic stuff than normal.

I would understand it if he said something is haram and then you raise your voice or protest, but he isn't so if he believes that then let him do a bit more prayers and quran and duah.

Surely you wouldn't discourage a brother from spending more time on his deen. So please let's just respect eachothers opinion but refrain from saying something is haram etc. etc. if there is ikhtilaaf

Not sure why people are getting so heated up about this thread. saqib7 Laylatul Barat is found to be a weak hadith, so we cannot say it's haram/impermissible, because it is recollected in Tabari. Although the hadith is weak in nature, it cannot be used to make a legal holy day of Shab-e-barat, but we can't stop anyone from doing it as long as it's not fallen into the category of fabricated ahadith.

According to the very words of Imam al-Nawawi, “The ulema have said, both the fuqaha, the hadith experts and others is that it is permitted, rather recommended to act in virtuous deeds, in acts of exhortation and warning [f. when you encourage something or warn against it]. It is permitted to act upon weak hadith as long as they are not fabricated”.

Also, equating this spiritual tradition to to drinking and killing is extremely unfair. Those two are perfectly and clearly described in the Qur'an as haram and have no relation to this issue. It's disproportionate to compare these two things.

I personally don't celebrate shabebarat but my parents do. I don't think it's right to tell someone not to do it because, after all, they're doing ibadah and it's tough to tell someone not to, but at least they're doing it under some basis of Islam. If it was celebrating the birth of the Prophet (SAW), it would be different, but that's another discussion . Allahu'alam, this advice goes to me first before anyone else.
