ashes Its a small world, my mum is from Kenya too.

The fasts are going to be quite long but i'm still looking forward to it. Ramadan is about 2 months away but I would urge everyone to starting preparing from now, don't leave it to the last week before Ramadan starts.

MJK subhanallah small world! We are from Nairobi, albeit we moved here in 1991, so I pretty much grew up here. All that's left of my "African heritage" is, well, African food :D

A great thing to do it to start downsizing your meal portions, when ramadan comes along your body won't be expecting a big intake of food over the course of the day so you will find the fast easier to cope, I know this advice goes against the natural instinct of 'can't eat food when ramadan starts, better cram it in now!' but that just increases your greediness.

    tl;dr: it's a dialect thing.

For the record, it is رمضان

To be meticulous, even the english transliteration "Ramadan" does not capture the heavy characteristic of the ض. So it's not 100% accurate in either case.

I'm happy you guys are calling it "ramazan." The desi name is "ramzaan." It's surprisingly close, since Urdu = Arabic + Persion + English + blah blah blah

ramadan is the best. i really miss the whole togetherness from the community. it just seems to disappear so quickly as soon as ramadan is over D:
my family and i try to make it every single day to masjid before iftar and get things set up for iftar and dinner. i love helping out and getting to meet everyone again. and then after cleaning up and putting things away you get to relax and enjoy taraweeh. im so glad its during the summer this year! no school to interfere :D

Sondos that is the best idea on MG yet, i love it!! We should definitely do it for those interested, we just need to find a different name instead of secret santa :P

In regards to the ramazan vs ramadan its just a spelling thing according to regions\countries id say. For example there is no "dh" in turkish, so its called Ramazan.

about ramadan.. is like the gaming part of the site going into hibernation for the duration? I am reasonably sure that my mom isn't the only one who likes banning video games during ramadan.
