Weeks ago, we reported on the possibility of the increasingly popular ArmA II mod Day Z turning into a standalone experience before year’s end. As it now stands, Day Z is being turned into its own project, and is being developed by ArmA II developer Bohemia Interactive and lead by none other than the lead mod designer himself.
“That’s right, this is actually happening – DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive,” mentioned lead designer Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall in a post on the Day Z dev team Tumblr.
“This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago.”
As was mentioned by Rocket in our previous article regarding this news, the project will slowly form into what he’s calling the “Minecraft development model”, in that the team will produce “fast iterations” of the game in ongoing alpha, which will be available for a heavily discounted price.
Don’t worry though – anyone who is playing the mod currently will continue to be able to do so as the game approaches its standalone status. The team plans to continue putting out updates to the mod in its current state while (in parallel) developing the standalone version.
Excuse me for a moment – I must go dance.
