Now, the WW1 setting may put some people off but Ive had a lot of fun with the game so far and I love the simplicity of the planes from back then. It also has an active multiplayer and a good server browser so you can get some good mileage out of the game.
The only caveat is the content. The Iron Cross Edition comes with 8 to 9 planes unlocked from the beginning but there are many more planes that you would have to buy if you wanted them. Personally...I want them ALL cuz they're so freakin cool - but some may not like that the planes are paid DLC. The reason why its like this however is that they need that money to support the game and support it they have. Constant updates and content prove that it isnt just a money grab. The flight sim genre is a niche market and making a game for it doesnt really rake in the cash. Haha.
That said, they do have sales from time to time on their plane DLC - which is what Im currently waiting for - and its at that time that you can really expand your hanger. They also give you a discount if you buy in bulk - up to 45% off if you but 19 planes. haha. Which I hope to do iA. lol. (Yes I like the game that much) Its from the same dev that made IL2 1946 I think and they have done a DAMN good job.
I played IL2 1946 a few years ago and man did I love it. I mainly played for the multiplayer. Nothing beats dogfighting in WW2 planes in a combat flight sim - NOTHING.
If you're looking for a great joystick buy the Thrustmaster Hotas T-Flight X. Its a brilliant and relatively cheap joystick. Perfectly solid and responsive.
