Lionsgate has today announced that it has secured the film rights to develop a feature film inspired by the recently released game, Dead Island. Now we all know how the usual game to movie adaptations turn out, rarely has it been a success or more so, has it reached the gamers expectations of what they would have liked. Could this finally be the “one”?
The Dead Island family vacation teaser trailer was a hit. You know the one with the lovely tropical island backdrop, the sunny weather, family photos and the, erm, Zombies eating your children one. I think every gamer loved the story telling and the thought of hacking away at the zombies with an axe. Well we weren’t the only ones as the YouTube video got around one million hits in the first 24 hours and nearly 10 million views by the second day. Not only were the Youtube armchair critics praising the trailer, Wired Magazine, College Humor and G4TV all called it the best video game trailer of all time, with G4TV critics sating “The Dead Island trailer is the best trailer I have ever seen in my life. The best video game trailer. The best movie trailer. The best anything trailer”. It even went on to win the Golden Lion in Cannes at the International Festival of Creativity and was featured by Adweek on their annual list of the World’s Best Commercials. So all in all I guess you could say a lot of people liked it.
As for the game itself it had a few problems at launch but it wasn’t exactly a failure. In the U.S. and U.K. it hit the top of the charts as the best selling game at its launch and has so far sold around two million units. Sean Daniel has been named as the producer (The Mummy, Tombstone and Dazed and Confused) so if you liked his other movies, there’s a chance you might be willing to spend your 20 bucks at the movies for this. So what can you expect? Heres a little bit from the press release and we have included the famous trailer below for you too,
“an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling. Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”
