Im sure you have heard about the Minecraft developers run in with Bethesda. A little while ago Bethesda’s lawyers decided that Mojang’s other project, “Scrolls”, was in fact infringing upon their clients trademark in regards to Elder Scroll V: Skyrim. Notch took things well and despite having received a 15 page letter from the men in suits, he was tweeting and blogging that he was sure it would be fine. Well it kind of isnt and it looks like they are going to court now.
Ok to start you off here is what Notch had posted on his blog back when this whole episode started,
A while later, out of the blue, we got contacted by Bethesda’s lawyers. They wanted to know more about the “Scrolls” trademark we were applying for, and claimed it conflicted with their existing trademark “The Elder Scrolls”. I agree that the word “Scrolls” is part of that trademark, but as a gamer, I have never ever considered that series of (very good) role playing games to be about scrolls in any way, nor was that ever the focal point of neither their marketing nor the public image.
Many, including myself, really didn’t think that Bethesda would continue on with the case against Mojang but it looks like today they received a notice from a Swedish court, stating that Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda is indeed going ahead with case. Then about 9 hours ago Notch tweeted,
The Scrolls case is going to court! Weee!

Daniel Kaplan, Mojang business developer, confirmed to Gamasutra, that they will soon be able to send in evidence in their defense.
“We are going to do as much as we can, since I really hate it how the big boys always get their own way. They even took screenshots from our trailer and said we copied them… we have mountains in the Scrolls trailer, and they have that too in Skyrim, It is really silly believing our game will be confused with their FPS-RPG with realistic graphics, they have dumped everything they could find about Scrolls.”
I dont know why Bethesda would be doing this, anyone in their right mind knows that Minecraft has absolutely nothing to do Elder Scrolls. It reminds me of the stupid patents where people have tried to claim that an internet hyperlink is theirs…
